The Mbuji-Mayi Democratic Republic of the Congo Temple is currently in the planning stages. No groundbreaking date has been announced.

Temple Announcement

On October 1, 2023, President Russell M. Nelson announced plans to construct the Mbuji-Mayi Democratic Republic of the Congo Temple at the October 2023 General Conference. Mbuji-Mayi is the second largest city in the country and the capital of Kasai-Oriental Province, located in the south-central area of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The temple will be the fourth house of the Lord in the country. The temple in Kinshasa was dedicated in 2019. At the time of the announcement, a temple in Lubumbashi was under construction and temple for Kananga had been announced in October 2021. The country, dedicated for the preaching of the gospel of Jesus Christ in 1987, was home to more than 100,000 Latter-day Saints in around 270 congregations. The first Congolese people to join the Church of Jesus Christ did so in Europe in the 1960s. Many of them met in small groups upon returning home.¹
